In recent years Mowi has taken huge strides towards sustainability. But there is so much more still to do.

As leaders of the Blue Revolution, we are committed to sustainably producing more food from the ocean to feed a growing world population. We believe that by being a front runner on environmental stewardship and innovation we can maximise the potential of this precious natural resource, at the same time playing an integral role in tackling issues like climate change and plastic pollution to safeguard the ocean for future generations.

Contribution to UN sustainability goals

Everyone at Mowi is passionate about making a positive impact on the planet and, even though we’re already the world’s most sustainable animal protein producer (ranked by the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index, 2020), we are not stopping there. In our agenda-setting Leading the Blue Revolution Plan, we proudly commit to maximising our contribution towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which calls on the governments, people and industry from the 193 member states to collaborate to drive sustainable development.

As one of the world’s leading seafood companies, we are uniquely positioned to contribute to these SDGs to help tackle the challenges facing humanity. And it’s something we truly believe in.

Plastic promises & lowering CO2 emissions

Our promise to the planet is absolute. That’s why, by 2025, 100% of our plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable, making it easier for consumers to make more sustainable choices. It’s why, by 2023, we will ensure that 100% of our farming plastic equipment will be reused or recycled. And it’s why, despite our farmed salmon already boasting a very small carbon footprint compared to land based proteins, we are wholeheartedly committed to reducing our GHG emissions by 35% before 2030 and 73% until 2050.

To expedite this transition to a low carbon economy, Mowi’s Chief HR Officer, Anne Lorgen-Riise, recently announced a reduction in business flights in 2021/22 by 50% compared with 2019. The move will cut our global CO2 emissions from business flights by a staggering 250T – the equivalent to taking 49.3 cars off the road for a whole year.

The search for sustainable feed

As the world’s largest producer of Atlantic salmon, we take the responsibility of ensuring that the ingredients in our feed are sustainably produced very seriously. With soy a key component of our feed, recent years have seen Mowi staff work closely with the Brazilian soy industry to ensure that all their crop is part of a clean supply chain and 100% deforestation-free.

With all our marine raw materials certified and 100% of our feed raw materials traceable, too, more than 100 of our global sites have now been certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).

Healthy fish

ASC certification is awarded to companies producing environmentally and socially responsible seafood – which is at the very heart of what we do. Though we’ve long been committed to improving fish health and welfare at our farms, we are incredibly excited about the implementation of Mowi 4.0 Smart Farming – a new initiative that will evolve our production and industrial practices at a quicker rate than any time in our 57 year history.

This game-changing smart technology, which is the result of years of research and development, will not only improve fish health and welfare but is set to have an extremely positive impact on productivity and sustainability, helping us achieve our ambitious goals sooner.

Circular economy & waste management

An innovative approach to waste management, which has seen Mowi adopt a circular approach to how we handle our waste, is also setting standards for the industry. Smarter working practices are keeping us on target to send zero waste to landfill at our processing plants by 2025 and vastly improve freshwater use efficiency.

A policy of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recapture’ saw 900 tonnes of nets up-cycled to swimwear or carpets in 2020, while nearly 50,000 tonnes of by-products from our farmed salmon have been used in non-salmon aquaculture and pet feed, significantly reducing our environmental footprint.

An ethos

Sustainability is a real buzzword of the moment but for Mowi it’s a long-held ethos. We have aligned with the United Nations’ SDGs not because it’s the right thing to do. It’s the only thing to do – for us, for the planet, for future generations.

We firmly believe that by working in harmony with the ocean to produce more sustainable food we can be part of the solution. That’s why everyone at Mowi are working toward providing a growing world population with delicious, healthy food from the ocean in a way that respects the planet and allows local communities to flourish.

Leading a Blue Revolution isn’t easy. But the positive impact implementing initiatives from our sustainability strategy has already made – and the potential to make an even bigger difference in the future – inspires us to do more.
