December 20, 2022
- Seven of the top 10 animal protein producers are salmon aquaculture companies
- Mowi – British Columbia’s largest salmon producer – is ranked #1 for the fourth year in a row
For the fourth consecutive year, Mowi has been ranked the most sustainable protein producer by the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index.
The Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index is the most detailed assessment of the largest meat, dairy and farmed fish producers in the world, with rankings for each company determined by a range of risk and opportunity factors, including greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and animal welfare. Out of a total of 60 global companies assessed, Mowi has once again been recognized as the most sustainable producer overall (for the fourth year in a row), with aquaculture companies, and primarily salmon companies, performing better than land animal protein producers in the report.
Mowi has consistently scored at the top of the index since its inception, due to its robust policies on responsible sourcing, animal welfare, environmental sustainability and more.
Speaking about Mowi’s ranking on the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index, CEO Ivan Vindheim said: “This shows again that Mowi is at the forefront of sustainable food production. I am proud and humbled to lead an organization that is a recognized leader in sustainable food production.”
Salmon tops the rankings
The 2022 report found that aquaculture companies, primarily salmon companies, continue to perform better than land animal protein producers. In fact, Mowi is joined in the top four ranked companies by fellow aquaculture companies Grieg Seafood ASA and Lerøy Seafood Group ASA, who are ranked 2nd and 4th respectively.
Dr Diane Morrison, Managing Director at Mowi Canada West says: “I am very proud of the work our farmers and all our staff do every day to help us achieve this important global ranking. As all seafood producers in British Columbia, we work hard to support Canada’s Blue Economy Strategy that looks to sustainably grow our ocean sectors while keeping our oceans healthy, we will look forward to working with governments and local communities to help lead this vision.”
