Mowi Canada West responding to naturally occurring plankton bloom near Port Hardy
August 27th, 2026

Mowi Canada West is responding to a naturally occurring bloom of Heterosigma akashiwo plankton affecting several farms in the Port Hardy area. This toxin-producing marine plankton has caused elevated mortality at some sites.
Our teams are closely monitoring conditions and have implemented measures to protect fish welfare and maintain site conditions. Mortality removal is underway using specialized vessels and equipment. We will continue to monitor the bloom closely and adapt our response as conditions change.
