Impact on the environment is a key concern in all of Mowi’s activities. Through certification by third party bodies, customers can be confident that Mowi is not only meeting environmental criteria, but also is operating in a socially responsible manner.
Mowi Canada West is four-star certified to the Global Aquaculture Alliance Best Aquaculture Practices, and Mowi Canada West was the first company in North America to have a salmon farm certified to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council’s salmon standard. We are committed to certifying all our farms to the ASC standard by 2020.
The BAP certification program has created standards for various aquaculture operations (salmon, shrimp, shellfish, etc.). The salmon standard recognizes four aspects of salmon aquaculture, with separate certifications for salmon farms, seafood processing, feed mills and hatcheries (representing the 4 stars). Each standard encompasses environmental, food safety and social criteria.
Mowi Canada West is a BAP 4 star certified company. All of our grow-out sea sites are certified to the Salmon Farm Standard and our Port Hardy Processing Plant is certified to the Seafood Processing Standard, which is GFSI recognized. We feed our salmon feed exclusively from certified manufacturer Skretting Canada. In February, 2015, we added the fourth star to our production with the certification of our first hatchery facility. Mowi Canada West 4 star salmon is currently available in the market

About Aquaculture Stewardship Council
ASC certification is the aquaculture equivalent of the well-known MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification for commercial fisheries. The ASC sets an unprecedented standard for sustainable food production.
The ASC Salmon standard was initiated and developed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as part of its Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue (SAD). More than 500 individuals from all major salmon farming regions participated in the Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue (SAD) to develop the standard. They represented farmers, conservationists, NGOs, scientists, seafood buyers, government officials and other stakeholders working in, or affected by salmon farming. The result is a transparent standard that covers a wide range of environmental and social criteria.
