Millennial Salmon is a four-year project (2021-2024) funded by the Norwegian Research Council – KSPSAMARBEID20 (Cooperation and Knowledge Building Project) with leading European organizations in the salmon farming value chain.
The partners within R&D, feed and raw material producers and a retailer, aim to create a knowledge-based sustainable salmon product that meets modern Millennial principles of life, taking into account techno-economic, animal welfare, environmental and societal aspects.
The project uses Black Soldier Fly Larvae meals produced by Innovafeed and heterotrophic microalgae biomass produced by Corbion. Both suppliers operate with minimal use of land and raw materials compared to competing alternatives.
Millennial Salmon is focusing on the life-cycle assessment (LCA) of the proposed solutions, which will provide a full picture of the impact of the new technologies on the climate.
The main goal is to enable sustainable future growth of the salmon farming industry without further deforestation or endangering the biodiversity of wild fish.
