Mowi’s vision of Leading the Blue Revolution can only happen if we are all willing to accelerate our learnings and embrace change. Our vision brings both responsibility and mandate to be industry leaders on Research and Development and technical innovation in the entire value chain, helping to move the industry forward into an even brighter future.
To achieve our goals, we have diligently over time built up world-leading R&D and technical capacities across our value chain which play an essential role in keeping Mowi at the forefront of the Blue Revolution.
Mowi has the largest dedicated research and technical division in the salmon aquaculture industry. Our Global R&D and Technical Department, consisting of 17 technical experts from areas of marine biology, fish health, technology, data science, engineering, economy, nutrition and veterinary medicine, have the main responsibility for planning, coordinating and leading global R&D efforts in Mowi.
The focus behind all innovation activities in Mowi, from small local initiatives to larger global research projects, is always the increased and improved production of sustainable, healthy and safe seafood. To accelerate this, our strategic investments in digitalising and automating our value chain – Mowi 4.0 – are harnessing cutting-edge technology to help us use resources more efficiently, reduce waste, and farm with greater precision at every stage.
The most exciting developments come from cutting-edge technologies that would have seemed like science fiction just years ago. In 2025, we further developed our Smart Farming technologies for improved fish health and welfare at every stage of salmon growth. With Smart Farming we are developing a fully digital integrated value chain through initiatives such as automatic feeding, real-time monitoring of biomass, digital lice counting, tracking fish welfare using artificial intelligence, next generation underwater cameras, lasers for lice control, closed containment systems for post-smolt production and subsea farming.
Smart Farming projects also continue to be part of Mowi’s focus to improve sustainability. The installation and optimisation of Remote Operation Centres, automation and digitalisation of water quality sensors, and net cleaning robots are contributing to making our farming operations more efficient and reducing GHG emissions by reducing the use of service vessels and associated fuel.
Mowi Farming Norway is leading the way in this transformation, and within the next five years we expect to complete the roll-out of Smart Farming across our largest farming units.
Thanks to all these technological advancements, the future is bright. Mowi 4.0 is an integral part of our future, and we’re incredibly proud of our Research and Development teams helping us lead the Blue Revolution.
