Our sustainability strategy underpins our commitments to sustainable salmon farming practices by prioritising minimising our environmental impact. Our commitments ensure our business is future-proof and are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Our farms adhere to stringent sustainability certifications to ensure they operate in an environmentally friendly manner. Some of our other efforts include controlling waste, freshwater stewardship, and implementing responsible feed practices.
Sustainable Certifications
Third-party certification is key to our sustainability strategy. Our target is to have 100% of our yearly harvest volumes 100% certified with a Global Seafood Sustainability Initiative (GSSI)-recognised standard, such as the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).
The ASC is an independent not-for-profit organisation that aims to be the world’s leading certification for responsibly farmed seafood. The ASC’s primary role is to manage the global standards for responsible and sustainable aquaculture. Mowi continues to be a leader on ASC certification and we are proud to have achieved our target.
Controlling Waste
The amount of waste generated in today’s world is rising at an alarming rate. Waste often ends up in water bodies and the oceans, impacting wildlife and biodiversity. Reducing waste in the first place and using waste as a resource by promoting a circular economy are two essential components of our sustainability strategy.
By 2030, our target is to achieve zero solid waste to landfill from waste generated from Mowi’s direct operations (feed, freshwater farming and processing plants). We also aim to have 100% of offcuts from our processing plants up-cycled into new products.
Freshwater Stewardship
Freshwater is key to Mowi’s operations, both to farm our fish and to keep the high hygienic standards at our processing plants. The majority of freshwater in our business is used to produce the initial life stages of Atlantic salmon. Such production is done in countries and areas with no water scarcity.
Our sustainability strategy focuses on enhancing freshwater use efficiency at our processing plants without compromising our high hygiene standards. We also continue to invest in improving water use efficiency through technological innovations at our freshwater farming sites, where possible.
By 2030, we aim to achieve a 10% reduction in water intensity (m3/ tonne of fish processed) at our processing plants located in high overall water risk.
Responsible Feed Practices
Sustainable sourcing of feed raw materials is a key component of our sustainability strategy as it reduces the risk and volatility in our raw materials supply chain. Our approach is to ensure full traceability of our feed raw materials, adhere to sustainable sourcing credentials, use feeds that lead to lower feed conversion ratios, and reduce the climate footprint of feed raw materials.
By 2030, we hope to achieve 100% of feed raw materials are traceable, 100% of marine raw materials are certified, 100% of soy and palm oil are certified, achieve an inclusion of 10-15% ingredients from emerging feed raw materials, a lower FCR and a lower carbon footprint of feed raw materials.
Our 2030 targets may be ambitious, but we are working tirelessly to deliver on them to honour the commitments in our sustainability strategy, and to expand global access to healthy and environmentally-friendly food from the ocean which will create a lasting, positive impact.
