Mowi has more than 20 years of research and development experience. Our organisation is the largest in the aquaculture sector, with four research and development excellence centres offering impactful solutions. Our research and development networks are present in all of Mowi’s farming countries where we operate. By harnessing cutting-edge technologies, Mowi’s research and development team is revolutionising fish farming, enhancing fish health and welfare, and driving overall sustainability.
Last year, we continued our digitalisation and automation journey from roe to plate, using our MOWInsight platform for data analytics to assist with our SMART Farming and SMART Factory concepts.
SMART Farming
Our advances in SMART Farming are transforming how we farm at sea and manage fish health, welfare, and biological challenges with real-time monitoring of our fish and the environment.
By integrating cutting-edge technology at every stage of salmon growth, we can gather deeper insights into fish behaviour, health status, and well-being at our freshwater and sea sites. These technologies allow us to proactively identify and mitigate biological risks while informing us how best to care for our fish.
SMART Farming is happening all across Mowi. It consists of three main elements that mutually reinforce each other to push our farming operations into the digital age:
- Remote Operations Centres: Help optimise feeding, improve biological performance, and meet each fish’s needs.
- Seawater Technologies: Next-generation underwater cameras, sensors, and AI help us understand what is happening below the water’s surface to best care for our fish. We do this through real-time biomass monitoring, tracking of fish welfare, autonomous feeding with pellet detection, and automatic stress-free lice counting.
- MOWInsight: This is the heart of our digitalisation effort and is a real game changer for Mowi. Our cutting-edge business intelligence platform delivers real-time data from both internal and external sources. This data ensures that decisions are made promptly and based on current insights should our fish need extra care.
Digitalisation is transforming our value chain and how we care for our salmon. We have made significant progress in SMART Farming and set the ambitious target of completing the roll-out of these revolutionary technologies in Norway throughout 2025.
SMART Factory
Our SMART Factory technologies have been applied in various ways to automate and streamline our operations. Our SMART Factory concepts complement SMART Farming in our journey to manage a fully integrated supply chain effectively. We are implementing new technologies and experimenting with AI with the world’s best technology vendors to assess how digitalisation can transform our factories.
These technologies are applied in various ways to automate and streamline our operations. From primary processing and secondary processing all the way to our global MOWI brand, we are introducing:
- Data-driven decision-making through MOWInsight
- Global benchmarking and decision support for yield
- Overall equipment efficiency and labour efficiency
- SMART Factory Control Center for process optimisation, water and energy efficiency
- Vision technology to enhance automation and optimise processing efficiency while delivering top-quality products
- Hyperautomation of tasks, including automated documentation for regulatory compliance
- Market insights for optimising customer processes.
